Bulgarian journalists protest against violation of press freedom by the state prosecution

The protest took place in support of the criminal reporter Boris Mitov who had to give explanations to the prosecutors twice in relation to his critical publication on a wiretapping scandal, involving Sofia’s vice-chief prosecutor Roman Vassilev and the current head of the state legal authority Sotir Tsatsarov.

More than 100 Bulgarian journalists and citizens gathered on Monday in front of the Palace of Justice in Sofia to protest against the violation of freedom of speech by the state prosecution. Bulgarian society has been deprived of the opportunity to be informed about the referendum

The Association of European Journalists-Bulgaria (AEJ-Bulgaria) is concerned that the Bulgarian society has been deprived of the opportunity to be objectively informed in order to take its decision on the upcoming national referendum on the development of nuclear energy.  The problems lays in the fact that financial barriers have been applied on the participants in the information campaign in the media. Therefore, AEJ-Bulgaria insists that any paid content in the media regarding the referendum has to be clearly labelled as ”paid advertisement”. (read more…)
